BT Freelance XD 5500?

I have had this system at home for several months now and all was working well. However for some reason, all of the handsets, there are 4 of them, flash 'Base 1' and are in-operable. They lose their date and time. They can be re-set and all is fine with them, outgoing calls can be made ok. The problem is that when an incoming call arrives, the answer machine cuts in but does not record the message and immediately renders the 4 handsets in-operable agin, all flashing 'Base 1' on them.

Any ideas please??

I just wanted to say thanks for the advice on here. Thanks to this we've now got our phone working again.

Up to 5 handsets can be registered and operated from the BT
Freelance XD 5500 base.
Each handset can be registered with up to four bases.
If you buy new handsets to use with your BT Freelance XD
5500 they will have to be registered to the base before you
can use them.
Register a new BT Freelance XD 5500 handset to your BT
Freelance XD 5500 base
1. At the base: Press and hold for 6 seconds until you hear
two beeps. You now have 90 seconds to register the handset.
2. At the handset: press , scroll to REGISTER and
press .
3. Scroll to REG BASE and press .
4. Enter the base number (1–4). The numbers flashing are
already in use.
5. Press . When the handset finds the base signal, the base
identification number is displayed.
If the base is not found after a few seconds, the handset
returns to standby. Try registering again.
6. The display will ask for the PIN. Enter the PIN (default setting:
0000). You will hear a beep. The handset is now registered

Hold the Find button on the base unit until you get a double beep then
tap the Find button 7 times.
On the handset:
remove a battery
hold the menu key and refit the battery
screen says SW VERSION
press up arrow key until screen shows REGISTER CLEAR
press menu
press menu again and wait for OK to appear
remove a battery and refit

Then register the handset to the base as follows:
Hold Find button on base unit until you get two beeps
On handset:
Press menu
Scroll to register
Press menu
Scroll to Register Base
Press menu
Press 1
Wait
When it says PIN ? Enter 0 0 0 0 (four zeros) and press menu.
If this procedure fails to solve the issue, then you have a unit with a
fault and if it is less than a year since purchase the retailer should
change it for you.

hi, I had the same prob and went on the BT site where it stated that each handset would have to be registered to the base unit (1). Check the link below and go to page 46.
