what is wrong with my dvd player?

when i switch from the tv to the dvd all i get

is a black screen no picture

but i do have sound. does anyone know what the
problem might be? its a
coby dvd-224 progressive scan

The dvd player keeps stoping after it's playing. It stops for about 15 seconds than starts up agian; plays for a min. or two and stop again.

i have no video output on my dvd player (Proton PDS-2315).
it just show black and gray sloppy waves and lines
