my toilet would not flush. I (single mother no diy knowledge of plumbing) lifted off lid. found what I thought was the problem, a little hook type thing was unattached. re attached item and toilet flushed. Now I have an overflow constantly. Any help on how I can resolve this myself without great expense, appreciated.

sounds like the washer in the ball valve is passing water, the only cure is to replace the rubber washer, not a hard job but would be better done by someone with a bit of DIY knowledge.
