How do you thread a singer 513?

When I try to sew with my singer 513, the top thread will break and I will have a bunch of knotted thread on the under portion of my fabric. The bobbin thread from underneath does not even catch. I can pull it right out. What am I doing wrong?

Found this for my wife, it worked for us, although our machine was missing a guide just before the needle, still worked though. Cheers, I'm going to bed while she finishes up!
