I have to drain the water from the front of the washing machine before i can open the door

YES, DRAIN IS SLIGHTLY BLOCKED

this is a general answer to fault find a machine that WON'T EMPTY.

The drain filter maybe BLOCKED ,pump maybe BLOCKED or SEIZED
find the filter and clean all pipes now move on to the pump clean check impeller is turning ,and check operation as a new one MAYBE required, lastly check drain pipe from the pump to the stand pipe is clear (has been known to get blocked)
