Is this a new drive?, if it is, it will need initialising, formatting, and a drive letter assigned to it!
Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools then Computer Management, on the left hand side you will see disk management, click that!, your drive should be there with a BLACK banner across the top of it (Unallocated Space).
If however this is an old drive then it MAY be on its way out, If u take the drive out of the caddy, and place it in a preheated oven (lowest temp) for 4-5 mins, take the drive out,reconnect then get that data off there as quickly as possible!, if that dont work try putting it in the freezer for 1 hour in a SEALED bag (ive only heard of this working a couple of times though) and then reconnect to the caddy again. Remember,get that info off QUICK because it wont work for long.
