when my simpson esprit 600 washing machine goes on to wash cycle it wont agitate it only spins one way can you help me

mmm same with my Simpson Enduro 502!!
It spins one way O.K, BUT - 'HUMS' quite loudly sounding stressed, while trying to agitate the other direction.
