The only oil you shoul use for external doors is Tung oil.
vanishes crack and peel and wont stay on boiled oil is fine until i gets wet then the oak goes black. Tung oil dries quick and hard and stays on the oak doors external doors should be treated at least once a year.

Brian,

All you need to do is lightly rub them over with wire wool. Then apply a liberal coat of Linseed oil with a cloth. You should ideally do this a couple of times a year.

I have had exactly this problem, I took a scraper (BAHCO from weldon - expensive but excellent) Then rubbed down with care and applied three coats of exterior varnish bought locally in France where they know what is needed for the weather. Rub down before the last coat with 400 wet and dry. magnifique!
