How do I remove the virus on my laptop I currently have windows xp and I turn on my laptop and have a blank screen with message about administrator,help?

when i turn on my laptop it has a message Application error "the application failed to intialize properly(0xc00000005) click on ok to terminate the application. And when I do click on ok, then I just have a picture of a sunset background. Before all this began when my laptop was working I was receiving messages of virus attack,and now I cant operate my laptop at all, cannot locate any other programs, how can I fix this?
