why do radiadors work up stairs but not downstairs?

Another possibility is that your pump has packed up.
To find out, first find it...Good luck. Some of the systems I've had to work on need the powers of Sherlock Holmes to find it !
Once you've got it, open the bleed screw (big silver screw on the end you can't miss it) then get your screwdriver and gently put it in the hole. If you get a tapping against your screwdriver pump is running.
If pump running then balance your system...Enjoy.

try putting the heating on wait for a while for the radiators to warm up, bleed them all upstairs, then turn all the working radiators that work off one by one, then bleed downstairs, they should then get hot, if they don`t maybe only the upstairs is plumbed in, if so, this is big problem.
