I have found this unit very teperamental. With regard to the recording error message it would appear very important to buy discs of the correct speed and version. The manual says Verbatim DVD-RW 2X Speed Version 1.0 or 1.2. Discs of this speed are quite tricky to get hold of now but I found a pack but they still wouldnt format and error messages came up again, very frustrating. I was in the process of writing to the Toshiba technical support departmal when I tried an experiment. I formatted a blank disc in a normal laptop then put it back in the DVD recorder. This time it formatted the disc and it works. Weird but at last I can record TV programmes

this seems to work:

1:finalise a recorded disk in your DVD recorder.

2: place finalised disk in your computer and copy it using Nero Burner. Copy to a new disk.

3: place copyed disk in Toshiba DVD recorder and format.

4:once formatted you can use.

Found Maxell and Sony dvd - rw worked but had to make sure the machine was on SP rec mode. It didn't work on LP, well it did record something, but you couldn't see the result, just a black screen it does show as a track though.

I have the same problem but i have found a separate part of the manual that says you have to use ones with a picture of earth and a 2 in the centre or picture of earth and ALL in the centre, (dvd-r vid mode, dvd-rw vid & vr mode).
I haven't found them yet so can't say if they work. I am trying to copy vhs to dvd not sure whether that is vid mode or vid & vr mode. All a bit confusing, any hints would help.

I had this problem. I discovered that you have to use DVD-RW discs, and not DVD+RW. I thought they were the same!!!

Just a thought. Did you get the DVD recorder free with a TV from Comet? I did. And I too have the same problem. I know the discs are fine. I have the same problem when recording directly or when trying to copying to disc from our Sky+ box.

Hi, Did you ever find out how to record as I am having the same problem?

Gill, January 2009

I get the same problem. Have been using panasonic dvd-rw and have been working fine. I recently bought new discs (exactly the same type and make) and now I get 'cannot record on this disc' It's the same discs so why won't it work?
