Loud Tapping from cold water tank?

Hello,
I have a cold water tank that is situated in the loft area of my house (right above my bedroom) which makes a loud tap tap tap sound which is driving me crazy. I can hear it when i go to sleep at night and this morning it has woken me up with the noise. im unsure what is causing this as no water is being used from thetank during the tapping sound. The sound can continue for some time then will just stop.
Please can someone suggest a remedy its like chinease water torture :S

thanks

There should be a small pipe entering the cold water tank near the top - this feeds the tank water. There should be an isolating valve on this pipe - close the valve and see if he tapping stops - If it does then you need to change the washer in the ball valve, which the pipe is connected to inside the tank - If not then try the section on exorcism. Best of luck.
