when our sony television is in analogue mode we have itv, ch4 and 5 but when we switch to digital it looses the 3 channels. We have tried manual tuning but nothing seems to bring them back

Hope I understand you correctly.

The digital channels are totally independent to the analogue channels. They are two seperate channel lists. Having the analogue version of those channels does not gurantee reception of the digital version.

Depending on your reception you may get ITV, CH4, CH5 analogue but not ITV, CH4, CH5 digital.
