I'm loath to boxing in and tiling the existing close coupled toilet [3yrs old] I want to change the pan for a straight sided one that hides the waste outlet.

Are the pans interchangeable with cisterns or will I have to buy the cistern as well?

The pans are similar, but they won't be identical, I'm afraid as the length and, more importantly the depth will vary. Also your proposed pan with the hidden pipe could be very awkward to fit as you cant get your hands in....the waste coupling pipe usually has to be fixed to the pan first.
