If you wish to repair your Henderson, Garador, Cardale, or any other UK Garage Door, please look at this amazing website www.garagedoor-spares.com
it has lots of information and fitting instructions on 'How to Fit Garage Door Cables' Springs etc..

george...
to retention a henderson spring you must first check if the cables are intact.
If the tension has been completely removed then make sure the grub srews are loosened off with an alan key. these grub screws are located normally on the left hand side on henderson doors at the left most side of the spring. if cables are good the gently turn downward on the spindle that runs through the spring until there is a little tension in the cables, at this point it is good practise to lock off the spindle with a pair of molegrips making sure to lock off quite close to the left hand bracket. the reason for this is so that while applying the tension the cables will not be moved in the wrong direction by the upward winding motion... in between the grub screws that you recently opened you will find two holes, one above and one below... insert a winding tool...lol... we use a phillips screwdriver and slowly wind UPWARDS. be aware this becomes more difficult as you progress and it is advisable that you approach this on a pair of steps, and if possible either at the same level as the spring or slightly above for safety reasons. depending upon the size of door and material it is manufactured from will depend on the ammount of winds needed. (trick) on the spindle that travels through the spring and to the left you should be able to see where the spring was originally set to because there is usually some dust or dirt on it and to the imediate right it is cleaner. so wind to this point then add one more turn to allow for age.. tighten up the grub screws remove molegrips and presto open the door slowly and check that cables are running correctly in the cones ie . .one grove after the other.. open door make a tea and thank god you are not a garage door installer . . it gets hot in there lol :)

i would suggest that you have quite and old operator. there are two possible causes for the self operation of an electric g door. 1 old radio freq. the type with manual dip switches inside both the remote control and the receiver box on the uinit itself. (normally a bank of between 10-12 small switches) these are used for setting the codes for your operator. sometimes on older units the acceptance of passive freq. can occur ie. low flying aircraft (specifically military) as these older radio freq. had to be passive.
2. An ajacent or close by neighbour may have the same unit and indeed same code as you. this used to occur alot back in the day..when fitters didnt bother to set up an individual code and simply selected 123 eg. on the bank of switches. thus when someone with the same code opened thier door, yours would operate also (this is quite rare though).. modern operators are now digitally coded and have rolling codes built it for safety purposes. my advice would be either to change the receiver and remote controls, or to simply replace the unit. A new receiver and 2 remotes plus an engineers call will cost you around £260+vat... where as a new unit will cost more, it will be an up to date unit!!

I have no experience of electric doors but... The fault you describe indicates that the drive mechanism is being "called" i.e. asked to operate. One of three conditions must be causing this - your remote control has a fault (in fact two faults: falsely asking for up and falsely asking for down) are the batteries good? - the control electronics of the door itself have a fault condition by randomly driving the mechanism - an external source from your house or a neighbour's is asking the door to operate. Do you have the ability to select a different radio frequency for the control? A defective fuse is not the cause - a blown fuse will stop things working completely.
