How can I get my dvd recorder to switch on?

I've been given a Goodmans GDVD306R dvd recorder from my Grandfather which worked before he gave it to me but when I've got it home and attempted to turn it on and set it up there is absolutely nothing happening. There are no lights at all appearing on the main panel on the front.I've plugged the power supply lead into something else and that appliance worked perfectly so I know it's not that.
I've carefully removed the top/lid and looked inside for and obvious loose or burnt connections but found nothing.I've replaced the little glass fuse which is inside the main body just after where the power lead comes in but to no avail.
Any help anybody can shed on the question would be appreciated. Thanks,

Hiya Gaz... actually saw the identical model to mine on ebay for £10 + £7p/p - won the item, and it works perfectly!!. I've since seen an old tv engineer mate of mine who confirms "ME's" diagnosis re capacitor. Says it's caused by leaving on standby too long... I turn mine off at the mains now. Cheers, Tee.

I've managed to replace the dodgy looking capacitor with an exact new one...but with no luck.It still refuses to show any sign of life.It might be time it met up with other knackered electrical stuff at the local council dump. Thanks for the replies guys and good luck with yours Terry,Gaz.

Hi again.I researched what a capacitor is and what it looks like and proceeded to the internals of the dvd recorder.Going back to your advice 'me' I noticed that there was a capacitor which was slightly bulging and had a noticably brown gunky residue on the top.I'm going to replace it tomorrow(Sunday)and I'll let you both know what the outcome is.Thanks again,Gaz.

Thanks for the replies folks.I'll certainly let you know Terry if I manage to get mine working.
In regards to your answer 'me',is the capacitor the little glass fuse thing that's got a wire running through it?If not could you please tell me what a capacitor looks like. Thanks again,Gaz.

Look for a capacitor or pair of capacitors near where the power enters your dvd recorder. Feel the top. If there is a bulge or if you can see some hard brown stuff on top, it's blown. Replace it with the exact same rating, it doesn't have to be the same brand. The rating is written on the side.

I have got EXACTLY the same problem with my MiCO espejo R311... I did the same as you and took the cover off, but I could'nt even see a glass fuse anywhere! - I did check inside for power with a meter beyond the casing cable clamp, and got a reading. If I find out a soloution from another source, I will re-post. Hope you will do the same Gaz. TERRY.G
