Household main water supply?

How do I fix the water supply in a existing old house. We have found the main supply. The cold water runs and stops within a few seconds, after opening the tap. The geyser looks like it's fine. But the warm water doesnt want to run. What must I look for? Were do I start. This house is on a farm. Good plumbers (any plumber!!) are few and far inbetween...

If this house as you say is on a farm then I assume you have a well. and if the house has been empty for some time then you may have to do the same thing I did when I moved into my old farm house. with a well you have a pressure tank on the line. you may have to replace the pressure tank's pressure switch. this is a switch that tells the pump to come on. and the problem you are having with the water heater is a easy fix. drain all the water out of the tank and then when the water comes on refill the water tank but make sure you open the pressure pop off valve so the air can escape while the tank fills. you should have no other problems with the system after you do this.

is it only the hot water or is the cold a problem too ? if its only the hot then it sounds like a blockage with the heater if hot and cold then uve either got a blockage in the cold supply whick allows water pressure to build up untill u run a tap ie part blocked or the tap is only turned on a small amount ie same effects as part blockage
