How can i tighten my handbrake on a ford focus. There is too much clearance?

My handbrake has almost stopped working.I need too pull it up so much that it diseneges from it's ratchet system ,so how can I manually tighten it. The brake shoes are fine and not worn. daithimac001@yahoo.co.uk

The proper way to adjust ur h/brake is to adjust ur rear brakes first and if u still have too much travel then u adjust the nut at the lever , but if that is too much for u then a quick way is to just adjust the nut but u cant keep doing that as ur foot brake will suffer

remove the handbrake lever cover and you will see a 10mm adjuster nut
