I have an AT&T wall phone,model 720. Incoming calls there is only one faint ring. low volume even when set on high and some static. with the wall phone connected the portable phone does not ring. If wall phone removed from wall mount, the portable phone rings. Any ideas will be appreciated

Sounds like a defective phone. It might have a mild short in it. When the voltage comes in from the ringing current, the voltage causes it to short out thus no dial tone on the line. It is like it answers itself. My recomendation is to eather take it back and get a new one if under warrente or get rid of it and get a new one.
