shop extractor fan?

my shop extractor doesnt seem to be sucking the cooking fumes, its making the noise but nothing seem to take away the smoke.

Our local Chinese Restaurant had a fire in the duct of their extractor from a build up of grease - they were out of business for nearly a year.

Perhaps it has a carbon or other filter for removing odours which is probably logged up with grease and dirt and needs to be replaced or cleaned?
