have i blown my alternator?

i fitted a new alternator but the battery was connected the wrong way on an old fordson tractor,we started it by shorting the solenoid ,will the alternator have been damaged ?

Very likely! I would think you will have damaged the diode pack if an ACR alternator, or the control unit if an AC type.
You could try connecting up correctly and see if it charges, if not, get it checked by a reconditioning firm.
