how can I stop the lens error on my Nikon coolpix digital camera?

When I turn on the camera the lens goes in and out a few times then lens error appears on the screen. Can you suggest how I might fix this. thanks

Take the battery our of the camera and let it power down completely for about 3 hours. If this doesn't help send the camera in for repairs. This is a lens error.
