Rover Streetwise 2005 radio will not accept code?

Can anyone help - after battery removal I cannot get the radio to accept the code. I have been through the sequence (press 1 enter code and so on. then press 1 to accept) When this is done the radio bleeps and says wait. Can anyonehelp with this?
