when i flush my toilet there is a terrible loud noise in the pipes as it fills with water this is getting worse and next door have the same problem what can we do

Having been suffering with the same issue I followed Colin's advice above today.

Bought 2 diaphragm washers from local (independant) hardware store for 75p.

First couple of flushes so far, and no noise.

local plumbers merchant told me a new washer (50p ish) would sort the problem out here's how
turn the water off
dismantle the valve that’s on the end off the ball cock where the water comes in and change the washer in there
worked a treat on mine, my mates & both his next door neighbours
also as a temp measure if you have got an in line water valve try turning it down so the cistern fills slower
