Kenmore Series 90 Plus 110.28942890 brake issue??

I have a washer that will do everything ok except when it goes to stop from a spinning cycle. First time I noticed anything wrong was on the slow cycle when it would stop between cycles. It would go "bang!" and would twist in place. Now when the spin cycle ends and it goes to stop it goes "bam, bam, bam, bam", shaking the house, all the time it is slowing down and seems to take awhile to finally stop. Looking online, I have suspect that I'm needing a clutch-complete or brake & drive tube complete or both. Looking for any insite. Maybe it's time for something new? Help or advice much appreciated.

i have a kenmorer 90 model number 11022912100
I have replaced the lid switch and the motor coupler
The washer still will NOT go through a spill cycle.

Water will drain

It will not spin??

thanks appldoctom for the info. before tearing into it, I did a little more "investigative work". as the washer goes through its cycles, this banging noise only happens on the "first" spin cycle after the wash. when it fills up for the rinse and spins at the end of the rinse cycle, the banging does NOT happen. i held the top open and watched. it seems the banging was coming from inside the agitator (i guess it's called). so it seems to be related to the particular spin after the wash and not related to the spin after the rinse. any more ideas before i grab the tools?

thanks,

I seen this problem many times but was never asked to repair, repair was always about somthing else, not much concern about stopping fast. The brake assemblie is onthe drive tube assemblie. To inspect remove agaititor, washer shell, remove motor, then three traniee bolts.trainee and clutch will slide down and out, drive tube and brake are up there where traine came out of.serch 4 solution there.Id have tranie out in less then 10 minutes so im saying its not hard.tools phillps,7/16 and 1/2 socket,5/16 ,1/4 nut driver/socket flat heat screwdriver.if you can afford to replace machine you might as well learn somthing and if it dosent work out you replace and you gained experiance.you can do it have fun
