I've had this problem and sometimes the problem is that it needs to be cleaned. Oftentimes getting it cleaned with a tape cleaner the vhs-cassette-type will do the job. Other times I have carefully and patiently unplugged the vcr, opened it, keeping the screws that have been removed organized to remember which screws went where (the reason is that some are sometimes longer than others). Once opened, I have carefully and patiently cleanend everything inside, first by using air to blow dust particles, you can use an air spray cleaner, then,very gently with alcohol using q-tips and kleenex. Work specially on the areas where the tape actually reels around specifically the black rubber tiny tubings. As you clean them, you will see that the q-tip will pick up black residue. that is good, it is that residue that prevents the vcr from functioning also.Be as thorough as possible. When finished, place back the cover and screws and test it. This is only one of the possible problems. If after cleaning it thorougly, it persists, do take it to a professional. I have done this several times and it has worked.
