date of longcase clocks?

please advise the date of Ellis of Woodbridge
W.L.Evans, November 2008
I have a Benjamin Ellis clock and it was dated at 1789 by Dennis H.B. Neal, auctioneer, of Woodbridge in about 1968. I live in Pueblo, Colorado with my clock and we have been together for about 42 years.

Benjamin Ellis worked in Woodbridge as clock and watchmaker and silversmith by 1812. He was still there in 1855 though his profession is rexorded as farmer by then.
Best wishes,

Pigot's 1823/4 Trade Directory has Benjamin Ellis, Watchmaker of Woodbridge Suffolk showing here.

A previous Ellis, a later Ellis, or even a different Ellis may have made your Longcase Clock - Ellis may even have "bought it in" and sold it under his own name.

Good Luck
