P.C. keeps shutting down?

emachine 420, it can boot up then straight away shut down,at other times will work normally and then again shut it self down. when this happens i remove the plug from the mains and then plug it back in; wait for half a minute then press the pc power button on,sometimes this will restore it, and at other times wont response to this treatment! i have to remove it from the mains for a good few hours, after this try it again and it will start up as normall untill it decides to cause me problems.

my friends PC keeps shutting down when he goes to load up a simple thing like, youtube and other things like counter strike, so i suggested he bought a new PSU, he did that, and he still has the same problem, so iv'e told him to take the side off his case, maybe this will work?

the heatsink is failing allowing the processor to get to hot ,buy some heat paste and apply it this should sort the problem.
this is a common fault to which i have repaired many.where people have them on there laps etc and block the ventalation holes in the bottom where it needs to draw the air in to call the processor.cost £9 for the paste

the emachines 420 has a dodgy power supply also ive also seen dodgy power switches on these models thats the one situated behind the silver emachines button with green led around it

is it old?
Normally these symptoms indicate overheating in which case it will automatically shut down when it gets too hot it will vary when it shuts down in hot or cold weather etc.
Reasons for overheating are
1. fan isnt working or sluggish broken fan blade clogged up
with dust and crap try to have a look at it
and remove any dust and fluff if its there.
theres two fans at least usually one on chip on the motherboard and one at the back in the power supply
2 your comp is all blocked in and the air cant escape bad ventilation
3 its overclocked and it needs to run at a slower speed.
4 some motherboard cpu combinations do run hot anyway take the side of the case off
5 theres probably a lot more but theyre the most common
Ps this is only relates if its overheating it might be something totally different

Sounds like your fan might have failed... It would answer the fact that it shuts down after booting up and will not start again for a while afterwards as it needs to cool...

Peter,
How old is this computer? Did this just start happening?
There are several things that can cause this problem. First have you installed any new hardware or software? If you have, try uninstalling the new device or program and see if it works. If this don't work it could be a virus or a power supply failure. You can try system restore and see if that works.
