sounds simple but my wife and I tried to replace a halogen bulb in the bathroom spot light, we tried for ages and still it would not go into the socket, can we replace the socket where the bulb goes without changing the whole spot light as we might not get the same spot as there are 6 in the bathroom

You should be able to replace the socket and make it as good as new. Parts are availible thru lighting showrooms and hardware stores or home improvement centers. Sometimes it is simple and a lot of times it can be a little involved. Depending on the fixture, and the socket itself. Some sockets have wire leads that junction somewhere in the fixture. It just takes some patience and determination. Just make sure that you reconnect the same way as you disconnect. Don't be afraid to ask for advice.
