Windows Vista Installer problem?

I have my laptop set on automatic updates but when I check the update program there are 21 impotant updates to download. Each time I try to do this 'Installer' informs me it cannot install until a running installation has finished. I dont have any installations running. I have re tried many time to update without sucess. Any clues as to what is wrong ?

Thank you so much for taking the time to help.
I followed your recommendations to the letter and then checked Windows Update.
21 updates were listed, I instructed install.
All were downloaded and all appeared to install then up popped......
Some updates were not installed
Codes 80070652 - 652

In short none of the updates were installed all 21 remain outstanding!!!
I only now have AVG free on my computer. I did install my XoftspySE from my old XP computer, I thought all was working fine with this programme but a few querky things happened which led me to question if this programme was compatable with Vista - answer no!! I uninstalled this yesterday.
Another aspect of the problem I have with installer is that is will not allow me to download programmes, it comes up with the message that an installation is in progress..............which there isnt ????
Any further suggestions you have is appreciated.

Few things to check, are you logged in as an Administrator?

Try changing the updates to Notify only and then manually check for new updates via Start Menu > Windows Updates

Do you have an up to date anti virus?
