How do I remove the cistern cover that has a push button operated flush?

I've tried pulling the cover off but there's a lot of resitance and I don't want to force it if I'm not certain that that's the correct way.

Do I have to remove the push button first and, if so, how do I do it?

it may be the type that you have to unscrew

the chrome ring around the knob unscrews on some models

The toilet I have requires the push buttons to be removed to enable the cistern cover to be removed. The push buttons can be removed by attaching a piece of sticky tape to the button and lifting it out. The screw attachment under the buttons can then be accessed.

The centre button should unscrew(anti clockwise)it's only finger tight.
