Dead Speedo Renault Megane 1.6i (Year 2000) K4M Engine?

The speedo on my 2000 W reg renault megane is dead. I have tried the dial check (pressing computer button whilst turning ignition on) and the speedo works during test.

I have been getting conflicting information to where the speed is taken from, the gearbox or the ABS system. I am under the impression the older ones had a speedo drive on the gearbox, however the newer models mark 1 phase 2, dont have a speedo drive.

Having looked at the gearbox I cant see a sensor for speed, just a reverse light switch.

Does my car take the speed from the knotched gear on the ABS system on the end of the driveshaft?

Europarts do list a speed sensor for manual transmission, cant see where it would go on my car.

Any help greatly appreciated

Very useful posts that saved me a lot of hassle.

I had a dead speedo, but all the other gauges worked fine. You can test the function of the speedo gauge by holding the push button on the right steering wheel stalk for 10 secs and then switching on the ignition (don't start the car). The gauges then go through a test routine. If your speedo gauge cycles through 20,30,40 etc, it is not the gauge at fault. Mine was fine and the fuse box on the left of the battery was wet, so not a good sign. I opened the fuse box & dried everything out, I cleaned all the fuses and all the connectors on the white connector block (it lifts off the fuse box), but the grey wire was heavily corroded. I cut it out of the connector block, stripped both sides and bridged them out using a butt connector. Net result, speedo works fine.

had the same issue 2000 1.6 coupe magane.. .. cut the grey wire out of the multi plug and crimped it together .. bingo all working

Thanks a lot Mark. I had the same problem on my 2000 megane 1.6 (no speed information at all: dead speedometer - constant radio volume - no automatic central locking above a certain speed)
The grey wire in the fuse box behind the battery was totally corroded. Now it works.

The connector in the battery compartment was the one that got me sorted. Yer a star, although I hgad got very good at knowing my speed by the rev counter/gear combo, hehehe

Hello Mark, thanks for the advice. We had similar symthos in 2001 Megane 1,6. The problem was in fuse box next to battery. The white connector has several small wires and grey one was corroded.

In other forums has similar faults and I think this is very useful information for them too.

Thanks again.

Mark.

Slight development, driving home from work today and speedo started jumping about a bit when I put the indicators on. Sometime stayed on steady but kept coming on and off. Also reacted to pressing brake pedal, however when i used the windscreen washers it went off alltogether. Came back on for most of journey after that.

When i got home I did all the checks you said, only problem i got was battery compartment was flooded with gunk and water. Unblocked hole and cleaned out. Removed all fuses, checked and cleaned and put back. Added water dispellant to help.

Went out for a drive to test and speedo doesnt work at all.

Any ideas? My main concern is the indicators etc causing speedo to flicker on and off, worked for a bit and now nothing. Do you think they share an earth?

If so where would this be located?

Any ideas much apprichiated as i am trying to put off taking it to a garage for expensive diagnostics

Kind regards

Thanks Mark. I an confirm ABS is working as you described, light comes on then goes off when started and stays off. I will check all wiring connections you have suggested and report back in this thread.

Thanks for the info. Bl**dy electronics - bring back points for timing and speedo cables.

HI there first of all ,if the abs is working correctly ,the light will come on when the ignition first turned on,if the light goes out and stays out the computer has not detected a fault ,and should be working correctly,.the other thing you can check is the car battery location ,if the battery is located under the scuttle panel on the o/s , then first you need the radio code ,then remove the battery and check the drainage hole if that is ok then you need to remove the black plastic cover, from the fuse box that is located in that area, and there will be a connector on the far left check this one first as this is for the abs,and possably for the speed signal, if they are corroded then repair all that need repairing also check all the fuses make sure they are all ok ,if there is not faults in the fuse box then on the n/s in the engine bay there is another fuse/relay box just behind the headlight remove the cover and look for the connector which is green and check the connector, if ok then ,there is one more place to check and this is inside the car on the o/s foot well, remove the kick panel and make sure the large wiring connector is ok, if still not working then you will need to have it diagnosed,as they will need to check the abs computer ,and from there you can see if the computer is working correctly ,please let me know the out come of your checks .thanks mark
