Kitchenaid s/s 25cf ice dispenser not working - how to fix?

We endured Ike this year, lost electricity for about 3 days, and didn't think to empty the ice bin which sits on the inside door over the electronics. After electricity was restored the water dispenser and ice maker are working but the ice dispenser isn't. From what I've found on the web it sounds like it could be rust or solenoid problem.

How can I access/remove the disperser parts to get replacements? I've removed the cover from the front of the freezer door and found electrical wiring, but cannot figure out how to access the other parts w/o having to take the whole door apart.

My wife called a repair shop and tell her it will run about $500 to fix. OUCH! Over 1/3 the cost of the original unit (bought in 2000).

We have the exact same model, and also the exact same circumstances. I tried heating the area with a hair dryer and the dispenser worked for a day or so and then locked up again. I've tried heating another time with no results. The ice auger spins freely, but no motor hum when you activate the ice lever. Trying to access the dispenser mechanism is frustrating. I can't find detailed diagrams.
