HP Officejet v40 Printer/scanner/fax?

When I try to use the fax function of my machine I get what I can only describe as waves of static sound. It doesn't seem to be my phone line as both the phone and broadband work normally and I can hear it dial. It doesn't connect, though, and faxes fail. I need it to send prescription requests to my doctor. Can any clever person out there tell me if this is fixable or will I have to abandon it?

Are you sure it is your fax machine and not theirs?
Have you tried faxing somebody else?
Have you tried using a phone in the telephone socket to check that you have a good conecction?
I would try all these first.
