What is the best way to repair the holes in knees of snowpants?

Both my boys (ages 5 & 7) have small holes in the knees of their snowpants. What is the best way to repair them that will also prevent further holes? Patches? If patches is the answer, is there a way to make them not look so tacky?

Instead of small patches on the knees, open the seams down each side of the knee and put in large patch covering whole knee.
