my rather old ibm 600e wont boot and i get 8611 below the memory count please can you help

That is a trackpoint error. Try wiggling it a bit. If that fails to fix it, go to www.lenovo.com and download the TP600E Hardware Maintenance Manual then work your way through the diagnostics on page 22.
