if its just one purchased tape it could be defective
if its all purchased tapes not recorded by the device its a tracking problem
if tracking is not adjustable (mostly on remote) It can be done internally
using an old (one you wont cry over if damaged) purchased tape thats snowy, adjust the audio head until satified being carerful of start/stop points of screws(small phillips heads) special care should be taken not to eceed the adjustment limits as this shoulkd be done while playing the tape. Most of your recorded tapes will now be slightly off track
but will correct upon re-recording.....win some loose some....fair trade off although.
