Alternator bushes need replacing - what is involved in removing the alternator

It is hard if you try to do it the wrong way! Whatever you do disconnect the battery earth before starting the job. Now looking into the engine bay you will see the Engine Control Unit box on your left. It needs to be moved out of the way. There is a 10 mm nut and a 10 mm bolt that need to be removed and the hose that is in the pipe-support clip needs to be popped out. The ECU box can now be swung out of the way. The pulleys and the poly-vee belt will now be visible. There is a spring-loaded tension roller which needs dealing with. It has a bolt with a 15 mm head. The bolt can be used to lever the tensioner and release the belt but it is a three handed job. One needs a ring spanner and some strong cord. Force the spanner so that the belt becomes slack then tie it back so that there is no tension left. With the belt out of the way the two bolts at the front of the alternator can be removed. Next remove the wires and the two bolts at the rear of the alternator. Ideally a cleat needs to be installed for doing the rope-work on the spanner as if the rope slips the spanner could give one a nasty knock. Shifting the ECU box is definitely a good move as otherwise the bolts cannot be reached. Good luck!
