Hi there
I had this problem and I think you will find that the shaft on the main motor will be turning but not be in contact with the rubber drive wheel to turn the carriage. If you just pull the motor into the wheel it makes contact and begins to spin. Basically the lever needs cleaning and lubricationg and probably means the carriage needs a service. I think you can usually get this done for around £80

I had the same fault on my nsm satelite it was the turntable motor contact sound sense electronics in pontefract as the will be able to assist I found them very frendly & excelent service phone number is on their web site
