printer, ink jet cartridge?

For about 6 years I had a Lexmark 1100 printer. I managed to keep going on one cartridge which I regularly refilled with no trouble.
Then I switched to a Lexmark Z515. I have refilled the cartridge several times, but each time the ink gradually leaks out and will not print at all.
Is it something the makers have done or is it me ?.
Any help appreciated.
