I have a push button flush toilet with the cistern concealed in a cabinet. The air button is no longer flushing the toilet. As an initial test I have released the plastic tube from the push button and flushed the toilet by blowing air through it. By this I have confirmed that plastic tube, together with the ‘concertina’ diaphragm at the end, are air tight. Just in case, I have cut the tips of the plastic tube, widen slightly by the fitting. After fixing the tube again I could not see much improvement.
I think the problem is that the ‘concertina cylinder’, fitted at the end of the plastic tube, does not increase in height sufficiently to push down the pipe as far down as it is necessary. In other words, the amount of air injected through the plastic tube by pressing the push button is insufficient. How can I correct this?

If the pneumatic push button stops working it is probably because you have an air leak somewhere. This could be in the push button bellows, the air tube seal or the clear flush valve bellows. It is better to know which part is leaking before ordering the spare part.
If you can get access to the top of the cistern lift up the 'cradle unit' which holds the clear plastic bellows (it slides upwards on grooves in the cistern) and extract the cradle, bellows, valve, tubing and push button bellows as one unit. Hold it underwater in a bucket, press the push button bellows and discover where it is leaking.
Then order the correct part (Google 'grohe push button') and refit.

I have a similar problem. I have tried blowing down the tube, but this does not make it flush. So I'm assuming it's not the button itself, but probably a slight leak in the bellows bit at the other end. Any thoughts? It's very hard to get at unfortunately. Are there any obvious things to try first, or bits to try sealing up?

Ordering 2 is a good idea as having a spare to hand gets you "on the move " when it goes the next time.A quick tempoary fix is to get a infant medicine syringe to deliver the "puff" to the flushing mechanism and get things "going".The syringe plunger must be retracted to allow the cistern to refill .

Jules response was correct and gratefully received. The bellows inside the button had to be replaced. It was possible to obtain a replacement without having to change the entire push button system.

It sounds as if your push button needs replacing. It probably has a hole in the bellows inside it, causing air to escape from it when pushed. This has the effect of giving insufficient air through the tube to the concertina cylinder.
