Peddle crank bearings?

My sons bike peddle crank bearings are on their last legs, open race type or caged if you like. Has anyone out there subsitiuted cages with loose ones with successful results, as I'm having hell trying to get a match and have been told as it's a cheap bike - £99 in a sale norm £150 which I think now was crap - it's highly unlikely spares would be available for any of the bearings, wheels, handle bar stems it's virually termed ' A throw away bike' 3yrs old and throw it away.
Many thanks in anticipation

the peda; crank bearings are all the same,
except bmx bikes with one-piece cranks.

you will need 1/4 inch bearings loose or
caged will fit. only use lithium grease to
lubricate the bearings, but you might need
a new axle, the size will be stamped on the
axle.
you will need special tools to carryout the
job properly.

your £99. bike is repairable, but it might not
be worthwhile doing alot of repairs on it, the
costs will mount up. they are deemed disposable
bikes, very cheaply made and unfortunatley they
don't use decent parts on them.
