karle, November 2006
I also have this siren 512 mp3 player and i tried to reformat it and it wont work.plus i got it from wal-mart and they don't carry it anymore.

You probably need to reload the firmware for the player. I contacted the support department and they sent me a link to the firmware installer. After running the software my Mp3 player is functional once again. Here you go:

Thank you for contacting Siren Audio Support. In order to flash your player’s firmware, please follow these steps:

Please connect the player to a rear USB port on the computer. The display should show “USB Connected”. (If not, please press the power button.)
Please make sure that all unused programs and applications are closed. You can close the applications by closing as many of the icons in the lower right hand corner (by the clock) as possible.
Download the correct Firmware

Click here to download the Siren 512 Firmware

Click here to download the ILO 116 Firmware
- https://system.netsuite.com/core/media/media.nl?id=16076&c=432868&h=b25618a8ea7ead5c9573&_xt=.zip

Click Open to initiate the download
Double click on the ILO or Siren folder icon. There will be 14 icons.
There will be a Setup icon that looks like a box with a blue line on it; please double click on this.
Then click Run - this will open the Install Wizard.
The Install Wizard has the instructions on the screen as you go through it.
Once the firmware has installed, please click the Start menu, then Programs.
Look for the icon that says ILO or Siren, and then double click the Firmware Update to install to the player. Depending on how severe the corruption to the firmware on the player is, you might have to do this step 2 or 3 times in order for it to completely repair the firmware.

Additional Tip: The player itself requires a lot of power while flashing the firmware. We suggest disconnecting all USB devices from the computer except the MP3 player and mouse; you can reconnect your keyboard once the firmware has been flashed.

This should resolve the problem. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reply to support@sirenplayer.com (including the entire e-mail thread) or call us at 254-224-0222. We are open Monday – Friday, from 8:00AM to 8:00PM CST.

If you can, call them using the contact number on the siren site. This is what they sent m:

To Format your player follow the following steps:

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SIREN IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE COMPUTER BEFORE BEGINNING!
1. Open up your My Computer Icon to show your drives installed on your computer and take note which ones are installed. Leave this window open.

2. Connect your Siren device and wait for the two additional "removable disk drive"(s) to appear in your My Computer window (ex: removable disk drive [E:], removable disk drive [F:])

3. Right click the first drive that appears (ex: [e:] if the removable drives show as [e:] and [f:]) and select format

4. Click "start" on the format window

5. Disregard the warning notice that pops up

6. Once that is complete retransfer all of your music and then your device should function properly.

Good Luck!

Does anyone have a copy of the firware file they could send me? My son has the 512mb player (the blue one) and it did the same thing. Any help is appreciated. I just contacted the company as well, and am waiting for a reply from them, but I thought I'd go ahead and post to see who answers quicker! :)

Jeff McKee, September 2006
The site for this mp3player is sirenplayer.com, not siren.com.
but I'm afraid it won't do you any good for this problem.

Tutsuflame, June 2006
You need a firmware upgrade accrding to the manufacturer. I am currently waiting for them to email it to me. The tech said it would fix the problem and reformat at the same time. When I get this file I will let you know if it worked and will provide an email address that you can reach me at.

Jeff, March 2006
Hey, it just seems that we all have been fouled. Paying more money on a product will result it`s quality :D.

So much we can do now...wait for someone to figure it out, they don`t even have an website. I am also waiting the files to make it work, hope i will receive them.
If any of u make it work, post back on the site.Good luck !

Dragosh, February 2006
I tried reformating using both FAT and FAT32 which the service tech at the factory said either should work. The player can be used as a hard drive showing the music files, but will not play them. The factory sent me a firmware file and it will not access the mp3 player using 2 different computers. I will call them back today, but getting very tired of messing with this stupid player.

Rod, February 2006
If you call siren at 254-224-0222 ( they answer call quickly) they will email you a firmware update file to fix your player. They really are great to work with. Or email me at static_mouse_71@yahoo.com and ill forward the update file to you.

Kristine, February 2006
the website is http://www.sirenplayer.com/

but not download... :(

I JUST bought my 512mb Siren MP3 player 1/9/05 and as of today 1/11/05 it has stopped working wit hthe same "incorrect format, reformat....blah ...blah...blah" I have tried formatting it multiple times and it will not format. I beleive that the products are faulty and the company website was not in existence when I tried accessing it (maybe someone else will have better luck) www.siren.com I am on my way to return this p.o.s. and buy a completely different brand. Good luck everyone...it looks like we all got dooped by what looked to be an awesome piece of equipment (this was the only one I could find that had expandable memory AND an FM tuner for under $100...what a bummer).

Jessica D., January 2006
i have tried everything, even contact the company and i still cannot get my mp3 player to work! please help me

ashley, January 2006
smae prob that I am having. I bought 2 of them for chrostmas gifts to my children, and both are saying this. Hmm seems like I was ripped off... C.D. does not help with the reformatting. I am contacting the company.

Amy, January 2006
I tried this and it didnt help. Does anyone know where I can contact this company? I dont have the software anymore and am trying to get the disk.

joel, January 2006
I was able to resurrect one just today by formatting the player with windows XP. There are 2 removable drives that show up in my computer; one is not accessable (the SD card slot). The other one can be formatted. when you right click you get "FAT32" or "FAT" as choices. Choose "FAT". Win98SE does not provide this option and it will still be unreadable by the player firmware (but still functions as a removable drive). Allow it to finish formatting, and when you disconnect it will scan for new songs.

Chris, December 2005
