KitchenAid Stand Mixer wont turn on?

My KitchenAid Mixer is an old K45 10 speed, it was given to me, it worked when my friend boxed it up. I cleaned it and painted it very carefully, (was awful olive green and filthy).

When I plug it in and turn it on nothing at all happens. Please help.

Steve saved the day for me. I replaced the worm gear. Then it would not start. When I was first taking the mixer apart I made the mistake of removing a brush. It sprung out and I did not know how it fit in. I carefully took the other one apart and placed the brush exactly with the angled part the same way. I finally found this site and Steve's directions. The little detent is not in the same place on both sides on my mixer. When the angled part was aligned with the detent on each side, IT WORKED. Steve, you are a real hero all these years later! Thank you.

Thanks Steve! For others -- you don't have to take the mixer apart at all, just remove two huge screws and align the brushes as shown in Fig. 34 of the link.

I took my mixer apart to replace a stripped worm gear. In the process, I pulled out the brushes (not required for disassembly). When everything was back together, the mixer would not run. I assumed it had something to do with the brushes. I followed the instructions on http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/smitty1486/2011-11-12_195803_kitchenaid_mixer_manual.pdf and my mixer is back up and running better than ever!

Woohooooo.... Thank you Steve....... I got mine working also , I found mine on the side of the road and I thought their must be something wrong with it, but when I got it home and plugged it in it actually worked. So I started to take it apart and clean it and I also took the brushes out to check them and then put them in wrong .... I was just about to order a New Speed control phase Board thinking that was the problem when I read this thread and also saw a diagram detailing how to put them back in..... again, a big thanks Steve

Steve is a rockstar and he saved my mixer!! WOO HOO!! An old KitchenAid was given to me at Christmas and my husband helped me take it apart to clean it. We put it back together and it didn't work. I about took his head off thinking he broke it! lol Thanks Steve!

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! My friend repainted her KA so I did the same to mine. Well when I put everything back together it didnt turn on. I read that it could be that the carbon brushes may be worn out so I ordered new ones. Well I replaced them and it still didnt work. Thank you thank you THANK YOU STEVE!!! I was about to be sooo sad. None of the other sites mentioned that the brushed had to be inserted a certain way. Im up and running again!

I have a Kitchen Aid Classic that I took apart to replace the speed lever. I put it back together exactly how I took it part. Plugged it in and it didn't power on......I saw this post and checked the brushes and walla it powered on! I didn't even have to take the entire thing apart! Thanks for the post! VERY HELPFUL.

I've only had my mixer of two years. I cleaned it right before we moved and didn't try to use it again until almost 1 month later. Well seven years later and Steve is still "Da Man" I took the whole system apart to repack with new grease and thought to look at the brushes to check them and put them back in incorrectly, Thanks for investing your time seven years ago Steve.

Looks like Steve has saved another one! My wife inherrited her mothers mixer after she passed away. She uses it often. It broke her heart the other day when it would not start..... Thanks to steve's advice, she will have a pleasant surprise when she wakes in the morning!

Steve's answer worked for me to. The gear is behind the spring on the right and left side. Take the spring out and the attached gear. You will see the "notch" he refers to and you will need to simply clean and reinput the gears, tighten and turn on. Viola!

When mine stopped working out of the blue I removed the brushes under the black caps on the side and cleaned and used a scotch brite pad to gently remove a wee bit at the contact point to give it a fresh surface. When I reinstalled it still did not work.

I read Stevens post at the bottom and then used a bright flashlite to look into the hole. As he said you can see a little corner angle in there. YOU HAVE TO MATCH THAT CORNER ANGLE TO THE FLAT ANGLE ON THE BRUSH. Do it to both sides and reinstall.

Turn it on and viola....it will work.

Thank you! I took the screw off in the process of trying to find things to tighten to stop the mixer from wobbling, and couldn't figure out how to get the brushes back in the right way so it would start again. Thank you Steve!!!!

Yes, whoever Steve is, he is wonderful. I thought that I had probably gotten the brush assemblies in wrong, but following the service guide instructions merely misled me further. The important point is to shine a good flashlight into each hole to see how to fit each brush in.

the brushes answer solved my problem, they are under the large black flat headed screws on the sides of the casing

make sure the slot in them matches the slot inside(may need a flashlight)

my mother was very angry that i took her mixer apart on christmas eve but this fixed the problem and saved christmas(or so it would seem, the world)

My 85 years old grandma borrow me her K45SS Mixer and I cleaned it up before returning it back to her (I took out the brushes) , and same thing as Vicky, when I plugged it in and turned it on nothing at all happens. You can´t imagine my grandma´s face when she realized that the mixer didn´t works. (that happened yesterday).

Today I found your reply to Cherril Morgan´s answer, I followed the instructions and YES!!!, it´s working!!! Now my grandma and I are good again. Thank you so much Steve!!

The brushes in my model KP50PSBU must be insert in a particular manner in order for it to work correctly. If you remove the brushes and shine a flashlight into the hole, you should see a small detent or "stop" in one corner of the hole. Its a square hole. Match this corner with the corner of the brush which is shaved off. The brush is not square; it has one corner shaved or smoothed down. This allows the brush to fully extend into the hole. If the brush is inserted any other way, it will not contact the motor and will not run.

I hope you get an answer to this because the same thing has happened to an old Kitchenaid mixer that I bought at a garage sale. It is harvest gold and I would think it must be about 30 years old because it has a Hobart seal on it. It worked fine but seemed to be getting hot so we took out the brushes that are located on the side of the mixer beneath the large brown plastic screws and now it is dead. Does anyone out there know if not getting the brushes back in exactly causes the mixer not to get power? If this is the case how do we get the brushes back in correctly.
