Water leak from Grohe popup waste under sink?

I can see where the water is leaking from but have no idea how to repair it..
Sink holds water but when popup waste released to empty sink there is a steady drip of water under the sink from where the thin metal rod mechanism of the popup waste goes into what looks like a white plastic washer then into waste pipe.
Help and advice would be much appreciated.

Place basin to collect any waste water under sink and then undo the nut which connects rod to waste pipe - clean out any rubbish but be careful that Rod does not disconnect - place plumbers tape around Nut tread and replace Nut and tighten.

shouldbe a metal cover over the plastic washer where the rod goes in and will just need a tighten up
