how can i fix my sky + box? (Thompson 80g sky + box)?

my sky+ thompson box will not let me pause tv, record or look up my planner. the green light stays on even when you switch it off.

It sounds to me as though you do not have an active Sky subscription? The box will not do any of those things without one.
