ceiling light & fan?

I removed my ceiling fan & light fixture and replaced it with a light with no fan. The original fixture ran off double switch, one operating a light only and the other for the fan/light fixture, which were hot at the switch when turned on, but had separate pullcords to use one or the other, or both simultaneously. Do I need to change the entire double switch or rewire the new light fixture in a different manner in order for it to light?
