upvc door locking mechanism?

i have had a new upvc front door fitted, to lock it from the outside u have to lift the handle then turn the key, this activates the deadlock.
if you just shut the door it can be opened from the outside by pushing down on the handle.
how do i alter it so that even if it is not deadlocked with the key, it cannot be opened from the outside by the handle, just the key.

Thanks for your answer...This explains what has gone wrong with my door.I opened the lock(by unscrewing the inner faceplate) because the washer that keeps the front handle snug against the front faceplate had snapped and come loose.

Before I opened the lock it was an automatic deadbolt i.e. once I twisted either handle upwards ;only the inner handle or the key could open the door.

After opening the lock i can unlock the door from the outside by turning the handle down.

I cant post the model number right now but could you please explain in general terms what needs to be done to enable automatic deadlocking again?

Many thanks

It depends on which multipoint lock is fitted,Some have the facility to change the operation of the lock to a nightlatch function but not all.Take the lock out, if it has two square holes (followers) one underneath the other then it should be possible to alter but you will need to change the lever handles aswell so they are offset (not inline when viewed from the side) If indoubt please put more information ie: make of lock etc
