kenmore model 116 38189890-KEEPS BURNING UP BELTS !?

kenmore model 116 38189890-KEEPS BURNING UP BELTS !
I replace the belt, vacuum the whole house, it does fine. Put it away. Get it out few days later and it burns up a belt in less than one minute. This senario goes on and on. I clean all hair ect. out everytime and the bearings have been lubricated.
I have bought enough belts to buy another vacuum.
Any suggestions??
Thanks !

The tensioner (the lever that you depress to turn the beater bar off has a metal tab that enables this. If the lever is not in the complet up/off position, the metal tab will rub against the belt and burn it out in no time. Have someone handy with a hack saw cut the tab off, thus enableing you to never us the function again, but it will allow you to save tons of $ on belts. I have the same model for 10 years now and no problems since I cut that tab off!
