audio cassette tape?

I have some tapes from an interview under caution and there is huge interference on them before we go down the path of of having to re-do it or abandon the case does anyone have any ideas whether there is anyway at all of reducing the hiss? The interview is there but barely audible at all

Play the tape on a quality tape player. Turn down the treble, turn up the bass and if sounds OK record it onto a fresh tape.
